Significance of Stereotypes

Stereotypes are standard weapons of political debate. Treatment in terms of the stereotype may encourage people to become more like- the stereotype even when it is an unflattering one. We recall from tile study of socialization and the looking- glass self in Chapter 4 how people tend to become what others think them to be: When worries were generally assumed to have no interests in or talent for anything but the homemaker role and the opportunity reward system rewarded them for being good homemakers but punished them if they sought anything else it is not, surprising ‘that most women did not.seriously want anything  Thus the stereotype operates as a self-fulfilling prophesy, molding feelings and behavior in the direction of the stereotype.
