Preserving the Class System

The educational establishment accepts the hierarchy of occupational roles and statuses shor this is necessary to prepare students to fill them. Meanwhile, students are being socialized to accept and fit into this system of statuses and roles. It is no secret that the: university departments most closely tied to vocational preparation, such as business, agriculture, and engineering are typically the most politically conservative; those least closely tied to occupation, such as the humanities and social sciences, are the least conservative ‘[Ladd and Lipset, 1978). Some conflict theorists believe that educational institutions are framed with the intent of preserving the class system unchanged [Collins, 1975, p. 450).’ Others call it simply a latent consequence of occupational training.
