A Global Popular Culture?
Before taking this course, what was the first thing you thought about when you heard the term culture? In everyday life, culture is often used to describe the fine arts, literature, and classical music. When people say that a person is “cultured,” they may mean that the individual has a highly developed sense of style or aesthetic appreciation of the “finer” things; however, some sociologists who study culture further distinguish between high culture and popular culture to explain different cultural forms.
